Spinal fusion is a surgical technique that combines two or more vertebrae in order to immobilize them and prevent pain caused by a number of spinal conditions, such as degenerative disc disease, spinal disc herniation, scoliosis, kyphosis, tumors and vertebral fracture.
Disc herniation can be caused by lifting heavy objects, certain sports, lack of physical exercise and smoking, and more commonly occurs in males between the ages of 30 and 50. Disc herniation can often be treated through non-surgical methods, such as chiropractic, rest, and cold applied to the inflamed area. Epidural steroid injections can also be used to alleviate severe pain. Discectomy is a surgical procedure during which part of the disc is removed to alleviate the pain caused by pressure of the ruptured disc on the surrounding nerves.
